4.0 denotes the use of disruptive digital technologies and innovative business models which create a whole new dynamic within the employment system. Neither the education system nor policy makers seem to be sufficiently prepared for the consequences. Established technologies which already far surpass human calculation ability in terms of precision, scope and speed are being rapidly overtaken by ever more intelligent machines. This may mean that occupational tasks that have hitherto been reserved for human performance will be- come specialised niches with more demanding access requirements. An AG BFN forum con- vened at the Technical University of Darmstadt in November 2017 to consider the implica- tions for vocational education and training at various levels and from different perspectives. The present volume includes a selection of forum contributions in written form.
